Sin CityGenre: Action/Crime/Drama/Thriller Released: 2005 Rating: ![]() NUMBER ONE MOVIE OF THE YEAR. Robert Rodriguez, Frank Miller and Quentin Tarantino have created a masterpiece. The movie was shot in complete green screen with the backgrounds added in digitally. I have been a fan of Robert Rodriguez for a long time. He has done such films as El Mariachi, Desperado, From Dusk Till Dawn, Once Upon a Time In Mexico, etc. He has just always amazed me and this time he really out did himself. It also helped that what he was adapting was already amazing source material. Frank Miller's graphic novels read just like a movie. They are so well written and the way he draws the characters and the backgrounds is so unique. The film was shot with a HD camera, so if you watch it on an HD television, it is crystal clear. The Extended, Re-cut and Unrated DVD was just released on December 13, 2005 so go check it out. The movie stars Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba, Benicio Del Toro (my man from The Way of the Gun), Clive Owen, Brittany Murphy, etc. |
King KongGenre: Action/Adventure/Drama/Thriller Released: 2005 Rating: ![]() I don't know where to begin with this review. The movie had me laughing and believe or not, crying at certain points. Peter Jackson really knows how to tell a story and his visuals were just out of this world. This movie has taken SLOT #2 of my Top 5 Favorite movies of the year. That's a pretty big deal. The acting was great, with Naomi Watts giving her best performance ever since 21 Grams. Jack Black was surprisingly very good along with Adrian Brody (who won an Oscar a couple of years back for his amazing performance in The Pianist). What a hell of a story. The cinematography was great, except for some minor slow motion shots that kind of through me off. I am just in sheer amazement. The movie feels like 1 hour, even though it clocks in at 3 hours and 15 minutes. I am going to see it again for sure. Peter Jackson is a genius. If you are into Peter Jackson, you should check out his earlier work, such as Dead Alive, Bad Taste and Meet the Feebles. This was before he had million dollar budgets. They are just cheesy zombie/alien/puppet movies that are so violent and so funny. |
JarheadGenre: Drama/War Released: 2005 Rating: ![]() This movie blew me away. Being a fan of Sam Mendes (American Beauty and Road To Perdition), I expected this movie to be amazing. The story is based on true events, which were contained in a book by Anthony Swofford. The film takes place during the Gulf War and it shows one division of Marines who are out in the middle of nowhere. If you are expecting a war film, you will not be getting one. There was not one battle scene in the entire movie. The movie mainly focuses on how the war changed the lives of these Marines. The cinematography is just out of this world, being that it is mainly off-the shoulder (which means, not on a tri-pod, basically hand-held). Jamie Foxx gave a very memorable performance along with Jake Gyllenhaal giving his best performance to date. He is very young, but he has a lot to offer. I am still a fan of his performance in Donnie Darko. Peter Sarsgaard gives one of his best performances. I believe that he is one of the most underrated actors out there right now. He always seems to carry a film with as much weight as the main stars. Again if you are expecting a typical war film, you might want to seek another movie. |
CrashGenre: Crime/Drama Released: 2005 Rating: ![]() This is Paul Haggis's film about stereotypes and racism in today's society. This movie will take your breath away. The film stars Sandra Bullock, Ryan Phillippe, Brendan Fraser, Terrence Howard (MY MAN FROM HUSTLE AND FLOW), Ludacris, etc. Ludacris actually surprised me with his performance. He really did a great job. The film pushes a lot of envelopes, basically showing that the world is full of racism and how it affects peoples' lives. Please see this movie, it will open your eyes about the issue. |
Good Night, and Good LuckGenre: Drama/History Released: 2005 Rating: ![]() This film was directed by George Clooney (who also directed Confessions of a Dangerous Mind). The movie is based on the take down of Senator Joseph McCarthy. They actually used real footage of McCarthy for the movie instead of paying an actor to do it. David Strathairn played Edward R. Murrow, who in my opinion deserves the OSCAR for best actor. His performance was breath-taking. The movie also stars Robert Downey Jr. I am not really into history that much, but this movie really caught my eye. The directing was outstanding. Clooney used a lot of selective focus in the film, which really helped the film in my opinion. It made you focus on the more important pieces of information. |
